Objective

An objective describes what is to be achieved, where you want to go and sets the direction. Objectives shouldn’t be technical and shouldn’t contain a metric, so that everyone understands where to go. Objectives should be significant, concrete, action-oriented and clearly defined. It should also be inspirational for the individual, team or organization that is working towards them.

Key Results

  • A Key Result is a measurable, verifiable outcome required to achieve the Objective.
  • Effective KRs are specific and time-bound, aggressive yet realistic.
  • Key result contains a metric with a start and target value.
  • Key Results measure progress towards the Objective — like a signpost that shows how close you are to your Objective.

Alignment

  • Aligning your objective will create better visibility on how you are contributing to the organization’s objective. It can be used when you’ve been given a Key Result as an Objective.
  • Directional alignment is when you’re using OKRs from elsewhere in the organization as a guide for developing your own individual or team OKRs.
  • It allows to align your objective with your team mate’s or the organization’s objective.
